Need a hand with Intervally? Email josiahrininger@gmail.com and I’ll get back to you. Including your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch model, its software version, and what you were doing when something went wrong helps a lot.
Common questions
How do I start a workout?
On your iPhone, tap Start on the workout up next, or the play button beside any workout. On your Apple Watch, choose a preset and tap Start. On the watch you can also say “Start my Intervally workout” to Siri, or add the Start Interval Workout button to Control Center.
Can I use Intervally without an Apple Watch?
Yes. Workouts run on your iPhone and iPad too: a tone marks each interval change, higher for work and lower for rest, with a 3, 2, 1 countdown before it, and the countdown stays on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. With an Apple Watch, you can run the same workouts on your wrist instead.
Will it keep going if I lock my iPhone or switch apps?
Yes. The workout keeps running with your phone locked or another app open, the tones and the voice coach keep playing, and the Lock Screen shows the interval you are on. With Apple Health allowed, the workout is also saved to Health when it ends.
I don’t hear the beeps on my iPhone
Turn the volume up while a workout is on screen: the tones play at your media volume, the one your music uses, even with the Ring/Silent switch on silent. If the volume is too low to hear, the workout screen says so. Check that Beeps is on in Settings > Sounds & Voice, where Play a Sample plays what a change sounds like. During a phone call the tones stay quiet, and the screen and Lock Screen still show each change.
How do the tones and the voice coach work with my music?
They play right over your music, podcast or audiobook without lowering it, with Intervally open or your iPhone locked. The tones are made to carry over a loud song; if your music still drowns them out, turn it down a little with the volume buttons, which set the cues and the music together.
The voice coach’s phrases are prepared ahead of time, only while no other audio is playing, and kept on your device, so they are ready when your workout starts. If a phrase isn’t ready yet while music is playing, the voice coach skips it and the tone still marks the change. To get the voice ready, open Intervally for a moment while nothing else is playing.
Why didn’t I feel a tap when the interval changed?
Intervally alerts you in one of two ways, depending on whether you allowed Apple Health:
- With Health allowed, a workout runs while you exercise, which lets Intervally tap your wrist at every interval change, even with your wrist down or the screen off. A heart icon on the timer shows this is active.
- Without Health, interval changes arrive as notifications, and the timer shows no heart. Make sure notifications are allowed for Intervally, and note that a Focus mode can hold them back unless you let time-sensitive alerts through.
If the Settings button on the setup screen shows an orange bell with a line through it, notifications are turned off. With Health allowed, Intervally still taps your wrist during a workout; without Health, nothing alerts you unless you are looking at the screen. You can turn notifications on in the Watch app on your iPhone, under Notifications.
Will it keep going if I lower my wrist or leave the app?
Yes. The timer keeps exact time no matter what, so it is always correct when you look back. With Health allowed it keeps running even if you go to the watch face. Without Health it keeps running with the screen off, and if you switch to another app, your interval alerts continue as notifications.
The app closed in the middle of a workout. Did I lose it?
No. Open Intervally again and it picks up exactly where you were.
How do I pause?
Tap the pause button. On watches that support Double Tap, you can also tap your index finger and thumb together twice.
How do I change, rename, or delete a preset?
On your watch, tap Work, Rest, Rounds, or Get Ready and turn the Digital Crown to adjust it. To rename or delete a preset, open Presets and swipe left on it.
On your iPhone, open Workouts and tap a preset to edit it, or tap + to make a new one. Tap Work, Rest, or Get Ready to set its length on two wheels, minutes and seconds, in five-second steps. Get Ready can be up to 5 minutes. Tap Put on Watch to make it the workout your watch starts next. Every change is saved as you make it.
Can I rename Work and Rest?
Yes, on your iPhone. In a workout’s editor, tap a phase’s tile (Work, Rest, Get Ready, and with Pro, Warmup and Cooldown), then tap its name at the top of the picker. Give it a name of up to 10 characters, like Run or Walk, and choose one of 16 icons, such as a runner, a cyclist, a rower, a dumbbell, a flame, or a heart. The name shows on the run screen on your iPhone and Apple Watch, on the Lock Screen and the complication, and in History, and the voice coach says it. To put a phase back, tap the button with its own name, such as Use “Work”. Names sync to your watch, and naming is free.
Do I need both apps?
No. Each works on its own: run workouts on your iPhone, on your Apple Watch, or both. The iPhone app is also where it is easier to build and organize your presets, and where you can look back on your sessions in History.
A change I made isn’t showing on my other device
Your iPhone and Apple Watch sync presets directly with each other. A change usually arrives within a few seconds when both are nearby, and otherwise the next time Intervally opens on the other device. Make sure Intervally is installed on both, your watch is paired with this iPhone, and Bluetooth is on. If both devices changed the same preset while apart, the most recent change wins. In the iPhone app, Settings > Apple Watch shows whether your watch is connected. On iPad, your workouts stay on the iPad: an iPad does not pair with an Apple Watch, so it has nothing to sync with.
Where can I see my past workouts?
In the iPhone app, open History and tap Connect Apple Health. It shows every interval workout Intervally saved, on your iPhone or your watch, grouped by week, with your heart rate for each interval when your watch measured it. If you turned this off, go to the Health app, tap your picture, then Apps under Privacy, choose Intervally, and allow Workouts, Heart Rate, and Active Energy.
What does Intervally Pro add?
Unlimited presets (the free version keeps three), a warmup and a cooldown on any preset, a voice coach on iPhone and iPad that calls out every interval, stronger interval taps on Apple Watch, and Pastel, a theme in soft colors. It is a one-time purchase, not a subscription: it unlocks Pro on your iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, and it is shared with your Family Sharing group. The Intervally page has the full list.
Got a code for Intervally Pro?
Open the App Store, tap your account picture, then Redeem Gift Card or Code. You can also redeem it in Intervally on your iPhone or iPad: tap Settings (the gear at the top left of Workouts or History), then Redeem Code. Pro unlocks once the code is redeemed, and reaches your Apple Watch on its own; to pick it up there right away, tap Restore Purchases on the watch’s Intervally Pro screen.
How do I restore Intervally Pro?
On your iPhone or iPad, tap Settings (the gear at the top left of Workouts or History), then Restore Purchases. On your Apple Watch, tap the Settings button at the top right of the setup screen (a gear, or an orange bell when notifications are off), then Intervally Pro, then Restore Purchases at the bottom of that screen. Use the same Apple Account you bought it with.
Can my family use Intervally Pro?
Yes. Intervally Pro is shared with Family Sharing: when someone in your Family Sharing group buys it, everyone in the group gets Pro on their own devices, with their own Apple Account, without buying it again. On their iPhone or iPad, the Intervally Pro row in Settings says Shared by your family. If Pro doesn’t show up on a family member’s device, have them tap Restore Purchases there.
How do I ask for a refund?
Tap Request a Refund in Settings on your iPhone or iPad (it shows for whoever bought Pro), or visit reportaproblem.apple.com. Refunds are handled by Apple.
Does it count toward my Activity rings?
Yes, when Health is allowed. Each completed workout is saved as a High Intensity Interval Training workout, or as the activity you chose for it, with every work and rest interval recorded separately, so you can see the breakdown in the Fitness app.
Can I save a workout as a run, a ride, or something else?
Yes. In the workout’s editor on your iPhone, tap the activity at the top of the screen (it says HIIT until you change it) and choose an activity, such as Outdoor Run, Indoor Cycle, Rowing, Strength Training, or Yoga. Apple Health saves the workout as that activity, whether you run it on your iPhone or your watch. Choosing one is free.
How do I add the complication?
Touch and hold your watch face, tap Edit, swipe to the complications, and choose Intervally. During a workout it shows the interval you are on and counts it down.
How do I delete my data?
Delete the app from your iPhone, iPad, or watch to remove everything it keeps on that device. Workouts saved to Health stay in Health until you delete them there. Nothing is stored on a server, so there is nothing else to delete.

Can I pause or skip from the Lock Screen?
Yes. While a workout runs on your iPhone, its countdown on the Lock Screen has Pause (or Resume) and Skip Interval buttons, and so does the Dynamic Island when you touch and hold it. To end a workout, open Intervally. The buttons don’t appear for a workout running on your Apple Watch: control that one on the watch, or in Intervally.
Privacy
Your workouts stay on your iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch and in Apple Health, and nothing is sent to us. Read the full privacy policy.
A note on exercise
Intervally is a timer. It is not a medical device and does not give medical advice. Check with a qualified healthcare provider before starting a new exercise program, and stop if you feel pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath.
